Before you have a baby its difficult to understand how hard breastfeeding can be. No one can prepare you for what can be a very painful and frustrating experience. Since breastfeeding is a natural process I didn’t believe that I would have any problems but I was very wrong about that.A and I had almost every problem that you could have and at times I was very close to giving up. There were points when it was so painful that I was dreading her waking up as I knew what was coming. It took about 8 weeks for us to overcome all the problems and during that time there were a lot of tears and feelings of failure from me.
I’m glad we persisted with feeding as now that it’s going quite well breastfeeding is so convenient. We can go anywhere together and I always have a ready supply of food. There is no mixing, no measuring and no heating of bottles. The only thing I really need is somewhere to sit and we’re good to go.
When I speak to people starting out on their breastfeeding journey and they tell me how hard they are finding it all I can say is that it will get better. There is lots of support out there and without it I would be telling a different story. I understand that not everyone makes it through the issues and as mums we need to support each other however we end up feeding our babies.
